DOROT is a not-for profit, multi-service agency and community center with a dual mission of assisting the elderly and bringing generations together. It is located in a brownstone in a historic section of the Upper West Side under the oversight of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The project included the relocation and installation of a new elevator, new HVAC system, structural modifications, the implementation of ADA compliant codes, and complete interior design. This very narrow, 12,000 square foot building was originally built in 1934 as a four-story structure, with a later addition of two more floors that are not accessible by elevator.
The mandate was to extend the elevator for accessibility to all floors. This required the approval of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission and the Board of Standards and Appeals. The opportunity to relocate the elevator allowed the building to be planned more efficiently whereby improving the quality of the spaces for both the social service programming and the administrative offices.
