Located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, the Jewish Community Center (JCC) celebrated its inauguration at the end of 2001. The 11-story, 137,000 square foot building, designed by AJ Diamond, Donald Schmitt and Company, consists of an auditorium, conference facilities, classrooms, a nursery school, teen center, art studios, culinary arts center, exercise facilities, Olympic size pool, locker rooms, library, café, Judaic boutique, administrative spaces, and a rooftop garden.
The vision of the JCC was to create a center that would "allow people across generations to share joy, seek comfort, remove boundaries, and make connections." To facilitate the JCC's goal the scope of work included a thorough review of the interior design, layouts, and lighting direction; as well as a complete furniture and finishes package.
The success of the project resides in the collaboration of a team of architects, artists, strong Board of Directors, and a very influential constituency from the JCC looking to create a warm and inviting environment filled with a multiplicity of activities. The finishes, materials, and details became the thread through which the diverse spaces of the building connected. Contemporary artists, including Michael Singer and Charles Simmons, were commissioned to create artworks that express the JCC's mission.
